Jacket Game Controller

Advanced Wearable/Fall 2023

This jacket is an electronic wearable that is designed to be a game controller. There are four analog DIY switches and buttons embedded in different parts of the jacket to keep the player active in the actual world while playing a computer game in a virtual world. The controller used in this project was a circuit playground microcontroller from AdaFruit company.

whith this jacket player will interact with two DIY pressure sensors -made from conductive fabric and a velostat sheet- for up and down movements, embedded inside elbows of jacket. To activate these switches the player needs to bend their elbows.

There are two DIY buttons made up of conductive metal beads and conductive treads that are hung to two jacket pocket buttons _and they are connected to two analog pin on the controller. Also, one of the main jacket buttons is transferred to be the ground, so if each of the metal beads touches that button the circuit will be complete and buttons will be activated. these two buttons are responsible for left and right movements.

the soft circuit used along the work is made from conductive fabrics and it is insulated by soft textiles and secured by transparent medical tape.

Used component and materials(Assembly list):

  • Adafruit Circuit Playground Express
  • DIY Textile Analog Pressure Sensor
  • DIY metal bead switches
  • Different types of fabric for insulation
